Reiki II Attunement

You may be been working with Reiki I for a few months or years and now you feel it's time to move on to a higher level of Reiki. There is little difference in the process. Your teacher will be sure you remember the positions and ask and answer questions. There are those who stopped using Reiki and then see an add for a class on Reiki II and decide that's what they want. The more Reiki you do, however, the stronger your connection to universal healing becomes. I waited about a year. I used Reiki on myself during that time. I really didn't think I was ready for treating others so I didn't. But I did treat my parents dog, Pigge, a poodle-maltese mix.  When he wouldn't eat, I would hold the food in my hand and intend Reiki. He would eat it all. My dad would tell me that I needed to feed Pigge because he hadn't eaten. Pigge lived several more years and his appetite returned.

My Reiki II attunement is probably unusual if compared to today's experience. I was the only student with one teacher and two teachers in training. They were of the Barbara Ray line and they handle teaching differently than the Phyllis Furumoto line. I'll write about this in a future blog. There could have been more students but I was the only one who signed up. It was great! This time the process took two evenings. I was attuned and then taught how to draw three symbols and how to use them. I was taught a shortcut for self healing and how to do distance healing. On the following evening my attunement was sealed and I was tested on the symbols. My assignment was to draw the symbols until I knew them by heart. I brought them to my next class and they were deemed good enough to teach from and then thrown away. That is because the symbols are not to be shared with "outsiders". Oh sure, today you can go on the internet and find these symbols and many more available to you. There are books that have the symbols illustrated as well. Anyone can use them but, if you haven't been attuned to them, if they haven't been passed on to you by a teacher, they don't work.

I learned about spreading out my self-treatment during the day, how to treat myself in a group without giving away what I was doing. Now, there's no reason people can't know you're giving yourself a Reiki treatment but if you're in an audience or an office this can be distracting to those around you. People don't pay much attention if you sit with your hands on your abdomen or behind your head. If you're walking or standing with your hands on your back, it's generally assumed you're back hurts or your's stretching. The point is, you can give yourself Reiki any time and most anywhere. If you have having pain or discomfort and it's not a 911 call you can treat yourself immediately. You can still treat yourself while you're waiting for an ambulance but if you need help, ask for it.

At this time I began treating my parents, usually through distance healing while they slept. I never opened a practice. I worked full time as a Librarian which means weekends and split shifts so there was little time to do a client justice. I did however, send and give Reiki treatments to friends and pets and plants.

About the symbols. I can't draw them for you or give you their names since I respect my teacher's wishes and understand the intention. I can however tell you a bit about them. The first is the Power symbol. It enhances the Reiki energy as it moves through you and to a client or just to you. I use it on my car engines and once was able to restart a battery with the symbol and Reiki. It only happened once but it was so cool. Now I just call Onstar. The second symbol is the Emotion symbol and is used to help with mental and emotional issues and is placed or drawn over the Power symbol. There are many ways to use the symbols and your teachers will share these with you but it's quite simple to draw the symbols (invisibly) onto the palms of your hands and increase the Reiki flow. The third symbol is the Distance symbol and is only used for remote healing treatments. I use it for journeying to a past event, my inner mind, or other dimensions as well.

I had one adverse effect from this attunement. More and more emotionallly needy people were attracted to me; just your average everyday can't get over their "stuff" folks and they had a need to share their problems with me. I began doing shielding meditations to cut down on the absorption of their energy. Essentially, any calming meditation before you start your day and envisioning yourself enveloped in a calming pink or blue cloud helps emensely. I was warned about this possibility by my teacher and later learned that this does happen to many people after their attunedment to Reiki II.

You may also find that animals, domestic and wild will present themself you to and expect you to send healing to them. Wild animals, usually deer, ferral cats, squirrels, and all the others will keep their distance but will look at you as if in the eye. They stand and wait. I hold up my hands and beam the energy to them and when they've had enough they go away. If you have an interest in treating animals with Reiki there are some very good books on the subject. Reiki goes to them even when you pet them. And of course you can Reiki their food.

If you have any questions about the process, please go to the Contact link and send me a message.

First Degree Reiki

First Degree Reiki or Reiki I is the beginning level of your journey as a conduit or channel for healing. After being attuned to the first level of Reiki you will be able to bring Reiki energy into your own body, mind and spirit and to others using twelve hand placements. Intention is the key that turns on the treatment. You intend to convey or channel Reiki energy and it moves into your body and out to the patient/healer and back out to the universe. You can use this healing energy on animals and plants as well and treating your food and water. You may, if you wish, imbue pillows and blankets and clothing with Reiki energy as well to help create a healing atmosphere for yourself or others. All this begins with your attunement to Reiki.

The attunement itself is a brief process, a few minutes. Some teachers conduct this attunement over two days and others in an evening or afternoon. I opt for the later. What takes time, of course, is teaching your about Reiki, about it's history, how to place your hands during treatment, how to recognize your energy cycle, which positions treat which conditions. Some teachers will give your a pamphlet, others a book. It's up to you to use this lifetime of healing daily and to study anatomy, chakras, hand positions in relations to the various organs and to learn to pay attention to your own body so that you can, in turn, if you chose, help to channel to others.

Reiki is a wonderful tool for stress reduction and relaxation which in turn helps overall health. In fact this helps me to keep my blood pressure down. I take no medication. My book, The Little Book of Reiki, is a guide to using Reiki as a self-healing tool.

Some teachers will attune one student at a time while the others wait their turn. Others will attune as many a 10 students in a sort of assembly line set up, moving from student to student through the four attunements in the process. Both work. My preference is one at a time and, in fact, one student in a day. This way I can give the student a full treatment or chakra allignment before the lessons and attunement begins. Always, I want the student to know what the energy feels like before the process begins.

Today there are scores, probably hundreds of books on reiki which will supplement your education and help you to further develop your personal approach. Books have been my greatest teachers but, you'll need a teacher to attune you to Reiki. Word of mouth is always good. Many massage therapists are attuned to Reiki I and sometimes Reiki II and may be able to give you a recommendation to their teacher. The International Center for Reiki in Michigan maintains a list of verified Reiki Masters/Teachers which it shares on it's website. These men and women are located all around the country. You can, if money and time allows, go to this center to be attuned. I used to be on that list but I had my name removed because I  was relocating to Florida where laws a different and I wasn't sure if I would be able to teach Reiki. Apparently I can, but only licensed medical professionals, massage therapists and clergy ordained and working in established churches are able to charge for treatments. Please keep this in mind if you wish to hang out a shingle as a Reiki Channel. Check your state's laws. State Board's of Massage Therapists may list Reiki as a form of massage even though no manipulation of muscle occurs and it isn't necessary to touch the client.

Next week I'll write about what happens when you're attuned to Reiki II. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

My Three Miracles

This article was originally posted in 2012 when my blog was called the Reiki Guide. I closed out that blog in 2013 and since then the name has been reassigned. I didn't include this story in my book, The Little Book of Reiki but I came to realize that my book might be read by people who aren'r familiar with Reiki and Dr. Usui. I'll add it in my next edition or my sequel.

There is a great deal of conjecture about Dr. Usui's background. I was taught that he was a Christian in search of the healing methods of Jesus.  I have heard that he was a Buddhist in search of the healing methods of Buddha. His story and the modern history of Reiki is well told  at Reiki.nu. The story that remains constant is his trip down Mount Karuma in Japan after his enlightenment: The Three Miracles of Dr. Usui.  After he achieved enlightenment, the doctor started back down the mountain and stubbed his toe cutting it.  He reached down to grab it as we all do when we hurt ourselves. The cut was healed. This was the first miracle. He reached an inn and asked for a meal. The innkeeper, realizing that this monk had been fasting and meditating for some time recommended a lite fare but Usui insisted upon a full meal. He was very hungry. The innkeeper brought his meal and Dr. Usui ate. When he was done he was well. He had no trouble keeping the meal down and was not in the least bit physically upset. This was the second miracle. The innkeeper's daughter came in and Dr. Usui saw that she had a towel wrapped around her face and head. He asked what was wrong and was told that she had a terrible toothache. The doctor asked if he could touch her and she acquiesced.  The young woman's pain was gone. This was the third miracle.

After attunement to Reiki, people have a wide variety of reactions. For some is it a gentle feeling of well being. It is common for initiates into this system of healing to experience two or three weeks of cold symptoms as their bodies react by flushing excess fluids and toxins. They will have runny noses and eyes and sneeze.  When I was attuned  I saw, in my minds eye, a lavender triangle spiraling through my crown chakra into my head. During our period of sharing my teacher said that she had seen it as well. This was my first miracle. I did have a feeling of well being. A sense that I was different.  My teacher noticed a difference in me. She said I seemed more calm. This was my second miracle.  During the next couple of days I went about my work and gave myself treatments every morning. On the third day I noticed my hands. My fingernails were growing. After a lifetime of nail biting I realized that I hadn't bitten my nails since I was attuned to first degree Reiki. Nail biting is a symptom of surpressed anger. This was my third miracle.

Of course, you may not recognize the little things that occur after your first or second or third attunements as miracles.  This is partly because others may have had the same or similar experiences and partly because we tend to think of miracles as larger than life events. If you are a Reiki practitioner, take a moment and think back to the first week after your first attunement and see what springs to mind.
